Confession of Sin
The Officiant says to the people
Dearly beloved, we have come together in the presence of Almighty God our heavenly Father, to set forth his praise, to hear his holy Word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and our salvation. And so that we may prepare ourselves in heart and mind to worship him, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy.
Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.
Silence may be kept.
Officiant and People together, all kneeling
Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.
The Priest alone stands and says
Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.
A deacon or lay person using the preceding form remains kneeling, and substitutes “us” for “you” and “our” for “your.”

Alleluia.
The following, or some other suitable hymn, or an Invitatory Psalm, may be sung or said
O Gracious Light
Phos hilaron
O gracious Light, pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven, O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of the sun, and our eyes behold the vesper light, we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices, O Son of God, O Giver of life, and to be glorified through all the worlds.
Then follows
The Psalm or Psalms Appointed
77
Voce mea ad DominumBCP p. 6931I will cry aloud to God; *I will cry aloud, and he will hear me.
2In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord; *my hands were stretched out by night and did not tire; I refused to be comforted.
3I think of God, I am restless, *I ponder, and my spirit faints.
4You will not let my eyelids close; *I am troubled and I cannot speak.
5I consider the days of old; *I remember the years long past;
6I commune with my heart in the night; *I ponder and search my mind.
7Will the Lord cast me off for ever? *will he no more show his favor?
8Has his loving-kindness come to an end for ever? *has his promise failed for evermore?
9Has God forgotten to be gracious? *has he, in his anger, withheld his compassion?
10And I said, “My grief is this: *the right hand of the Most High has lost its power.”
11I will remember the works of the Lord, *and call to mind your wonders of old time.
12I will meditate on all your acts *and ponder your mighty deeds.
13Your way, O God, is holy; *who is so great a god as our God?
14You are the God who works wonders *and have declared your power among the peoples.
15By your strength you have redeemed your people, *the children of Jacob and Joseph.
16The waters saw you, O God; the waters saw you and trembled; *the very depths were shaken.
17The clouds poured out water; the skies thundered; *your arrows flashed to and fro;
18The sound of your thunder was in the whirlwind; your lightnings lit up the world; *the earth trembled and shook.
19Your way was in the sea, and your paths in the great waters, *yet your footsteps were not seen.
20You led your people like a flock *by the hand of Moses and Aaron.
79
Deus, veneruntBCP p. 7011O God, the heathen have come into your inheritance; they have profaned your holy temple; *they have made Jerusalem a heap of rubble.
2They have given the bodies of your servants as food for the birds of the air, *and the flesh of your faithful ones to the beasts of the field.
3They have shed their blood like water on every side of Jerusalem, *and there was no one to bury them.
4We have become a reproach to our neighbors, *an object of scorn and derision to those around us.
5How long will you be angry, O Lord? *will your fury blaze like fire for ever?
6Pour out your wrath upon the heathen who have not known you *and upon the kingdoms that have not called upon your Name.
7For they have devoured Jacob *and made his dwelling a ruin.
8Remember not our past sins; let your compassion be swift to meet us; *for we have been brought very low.
9Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your Name; *deliver us and forgive us our sins, for your Name’s sake.
10Why should the heathen say, “Where is their God?” *Let it be known among the heathen and in our sight that you avenge the shedding of your servants’ blood.
11Let the sorrowful sighing of the prisoners come before you, *and by your great might spare those who are condemned to die.
12May the revilings with which they reviled you, O Lord, *return seven-fold into their bosoms.
13For we are your people and the sheep of your pasture; *we will give you thanks for ever and show forth your praise from age to age.
At the end of the Psalms is sung or said
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

A Song of Wisdom
Sapientia liberavitWisdom 10:15-19,20b-21
Wisdom freed from a nation of oppressors *a holy people and a blameless race.
She entered the soul of a servant of the Lord, *withstood dread rulers with wonders and signs.
To the saints she gave the reward of their labors, *and led them by a marvelous way;
She was their shelter by day *and a blaze of stars by night.
She brought them across the Red Sea, *she led them through mighty waters;
But their enemies she swallowed in the waves *and spewed them out from the depths of the abyss.
And then, Lord, the righteous sang hymns to your Name, *and praised with one voice your protecting hand;
For Wisdom opened the mouths of the mute, *and gave speech to the tongues of a new-born people.
The Apostles’ Creed
Officiant and People together, all standing
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Officiant then says one or more of the following Collects
Proper 27
The Sunday closest to November 9
O God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Martin of Tours
Lord God of hosts, you clothed your servant Martin the soldier with the spirit of sacrifice and set him as a bishop in your church to be a defender of the catholic faith: Give us grace to follow in his holy steps, that, at the last, we may be found clothed with righteousness in the dwellings of peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
A Collect for Peace
Most holy God, the source of all good desires, all right judgments, and all just works: Give to us, your servants, that peace which the world cannot give, so that our minds may be fixed on the doing of your will, and that we, being delivered from the fear of all enemies, may live in peace and quietness; through the mercies of Christ Jesus our Savior. Amen.
A Collect for Aid against Perils
Be our light in the darkness, O Lord, and in your great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of your only Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
A Collect for Protection
O God, the life of all who live, the light of the faithful, the strength of those who labor, and the repose of the dead: We thank you for the blessings of the day that is past, and humbly ask for your protection through the coming night. Bring us in safety to the morning hours; through him who died and rose again for us, your Son our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
A Collect for the Presence of Christ
Lord Jesus, stay with us, for evening is at hand and the day is past; be our companion in the way, kindle our hearts, and awaken hope, that we may know you as you are revealed in Scripture and the breaking of bread. Grant this for the sake of your love. Amen.
Then, unless the Eucharist or a form of general intercession is to follow, one of these prayers for mission is added
O God and Father of all, whom the whole heavens adore: Let the whole earth also worship you, all nations obey you, all tongues confess and bless you, and men and women everywhere love you and serve you in peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love’s sake. Amen.
O God, you manifest in your servants the signs of your presence: Send forth upon us the spirit of love, that in companionship with one another your abounding grace may increase among us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Here may be sung a hymn or anthem.
Authorized intercessions and thanksgivings may follow.
Before the close of the Office one or both of the following may be used
The General Thanksgiving
Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.
And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.
A Prayer of St. Chrysostom
Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.
Then may be said
Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
The Officiant may then conclude with one of the following
