Eve of Holy Cross Day

    The Collect of the Day

    Holy Cross Day

    September 14

Almighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ was lifted high upon the cross that he might draw the whole world to himself: Mercifully grant that we, who glory in the mystery of our redemption, may have grace to take up our cross and follow him; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

1God is our refuge and strength, *a very present help in trouble.

    2Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved, *and though the mountains be toppled into the depths of the sea;

3Though its waters rage and foam, *and though the mountains tremble at its tumult.

4The Lord of hosts is with us; *the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

5There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, *the holy habitation of the Most High.

6God is in the midst of her; she shall not be overthrown; *God shall help her at the break of day.

7The nations make much ado, and the kingdoms are shaken; *God has spoken, and the earth shall melt away.

8The Lord of hosts is with us; *the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

9Come now and look upon the works of the Lord, *what awesome things he has done on earth.

10It is he who makes war to cease in all the world; *he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear, and burns the shields with fire.

11“Be still, then, and know that I am God; *I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth.”

12The Lord of hosts is with us; *the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

1On the holy mountain stands the city he has founded; *the Lord loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob.

2Glorious things are spoken of you, *O city of our God.

3I count Egypt and Babylon among those who know me; *behold Philistia, Tyre, and Ethiopia: in Zion were they born.

4Of Zion it shall be said, “Everyone was born in her, *and the Most High himself shall sustain her.”

5The Lord will record as he enrolls the peoples, *“These also were born there.”

6The singers and the dancers will say, *“All my fresh springs are in you.”

    Ephes. 2:11-22

11 So then, remember that at one time you Gentiles by birth, called “the uncircumcision” by those who are called “the circumcision” —a physical circumcision made in the flesh by human hands— 12 remember that you were at that time without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us. 15 He has abolished the law with its commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new humanity in place of the two, thus making peace, 16 and might reconcile both groups to God in one body through the cross, thus putting to death that hostility through it. 17 So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; 18 for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father. 19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, 20 built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. 21 In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; 22 in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling place for God.

    1 Kings 8:22-30

22 Then Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands to heaven. 23 He said, “O Lord, God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth beneath, keeping covenant and steadfast love for your servants who walk before you with all their heart, 24 the covenant that you kept for your servant my father David as you declared to him; you promised with your mouth and have this day fulfilled with your hand. 25 Therefore, O Lord, God of Israel, keep for your servant my father David that which you promised him, saying, ‘There shall never fail you a successor before me to sit on the throne of Israel, if only your children look to their way, to walk before me as you have walked before me.’ 26 Therefore, O God of Israel, let your word be confirmed, which you promised to your servant my father David. 27 “But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Even heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you, much less this house that I have built! 28 Regard your servant’s prayer and his plea, O Lord my God, heeding the cry and the prayer that your servant prays to you today; 29 that your eyes may be open night and day toward this house, the place of which you said, ‘My name shall be there,’ that you may heed the prayer that your servant prays toward this place. 30 Hear the plea of your servant and of your people Israel when they pray toward this place; O hear in heaven your dwelling place; heed and forgive.
